The local artist works on both a large and small scale in That’s Not How I Remember It. At the center of the gallery, large enough to walk under (well, stoop) is a giant dress made from the iconic big blue tarp fabric used to cover so many roofs here in the rainy Northwest. Niemi says the sculpture is a tribute to Gunter Grass’ The Tin Drum, a misreading of an episode where a child hides beneath a woman’s skirts. On the walls are textual appropriations of a different nature: Niemi has borrowed various literary scarps and slogans, then stitched them onto small sheets of paper. The sources aren’t divulged, and some of the Barbara Kruger-style aphorisms are evidently Niemi’s own. It’s a show that, in its entirety, you wish could run a little longer. An appropriate venue would be the library, where kids would be delighted to read at the small table sheltered by the big blue dress. BRIAN MILLER
