Ravi Coltrane Quartet

Thursday, July 26

Given that no jazz musician alive has a bigger shadow to emerge from under, it’s remarkable how patient and deliberate Ravi Coltrane’s development has been. Instead of rushing to announce his distinctive voice, the son of John and Alice has slowly built a contemplative, almost diffident sound that neither mimics nor runs away from his genius father. His most recent Blue Note disc, In Flux, was a smart, unshowy piece of ensemble playing, full of beautiful moments, and three years after that session, Coltrane’s sympathetic vibration with pianist Luis Perdomo and drummer EJ Strickland should be even more dynamic and refined. If he sometimes lacks a certain urgency, I’ll still take his deliberate sincerity over a dozen other strident saxophonists with nothing to say. Appearing nightly, through July 29th.
