Puffy AmiYumi

Tuesday, November 13

In Japan, Puffy are a pop-rock duo at a level of stardom that includes having their very own action figures and weekly television show. In America, Puffy are probably better known as the band that almost got sued by Sean “Diddy” Combs a few years back for using a name similar to his. In Tokyo, the girls were molded into a pop group by a Sony talent agency, but stateside they tend to be marketed as an indie band. Wearing ripped designer jeans, they sing what sound like heavily accented karaoke versions of Beatles songs (neither speaks English very well, and they often address their American audiences by reading off cue cards). But with bizarre song titles like “Destruction Pancake” and earnest lyrics like “Ooh, ooh/We’re just straight up rock ’n’ roll,” it’s hard not to like this well-meaning, infectious duo.
