Persepolis

A small landmark in feature animation, Persepolis (2008) is based on the comic-book memoirs of Marjane Satrapi. We first meet little Marjane in 1978 Tehran, where she witnesses the ayatollah’s fundamentalist revolution. Sent by her parents to a Viennese Lycée Française, teen Marjane’s focus turns inward—she’s victimized by boys and by her alien pubescent body. The accessibility of Satrapi’s firsthand address—how she refits epic national tragedy to an identifiably personal scale—deservedly earned this film an Oscar nomination. (PG-13) NICK PINKERTON
