A small landmark in feature animation, Persepolis (2008) is based on the comic-book memoirs of Marjane Satrapi. We first meet little Marjane in 1978 Tehran, where she witnesses the ayatollahs fundamentalist revolution. Sent by her parents to a Viennese Lycée Française, teen Marjane’s focus turns inwardshe’s victimized by boys and by her alien pubescent body. The accessibility of Satrapi’s firsthand addresshow she refits epic national tragedy to an identifiably personal scaledeservedly earned this film an Oscar nomination. (PG-13) NICK PINKERTON
