Low

Devastation from a slowcore trio

“Just like diamonds in your hand/I’ll just cut you in the end.” Even when they’re (relatively) rocking out in songs like “Just Stand Back,” from their 2005 Sub Pop album The Great Destroyer, the Minnesota-based trio Low can’t shake their sinister side. Guitarist/vocalist Alan Sparhawk, his harmonizing/drummer wife Mimi Parker, and bassist Matt Livingston have made a long career from being musically and lyrically devastating, their glacial arrangements sometimes called “slowcore.” Albums like I Could Live In Hope, Trust, and Things We Lost in the Fire are part of most ‘90s-bred indie rock fans’ permanent collections—discs you’ll never sell, because of their uncanny ability to anchor themselves to crucial memories. Low’s songs bring up the shitty things about life or relationships (however obtusely), but somehow it’s not overbearing like a lot of sad-bastard music can be. And the sweet moments are that much sweeter for it. If you’ve only ever seen them in a noisy dive bar, don’t miss this two-night stand supporting their latest, Drums and Guns.
