Kyle Field, the nomadic songwriter and visual artist who performs as Little Wings, cobbles together his whimsical, lo-fi folk songs in a style similar to older Beck and Devendra Banhart. In his high, quivering voice, Field sings lovely, remarkably sincere ditties about the transient life, the music industry and the natural world. Though he was once the bassist and singer in a band called Rodriguez, in which he performed with Matt Ward (better known as M. Ward) and drummer Mike Funk, Field eschews traveling encumbered by instruments, and chooses instead to have his rotating cast of local friend-musicians to play their own instruments for his live shows. He’s now on K Records, but ten years and over half a dozen albums later, Field remains one of the lesser known musicians to grace the prestigious label’s ranks. With his most recent album, Soft Pow’r, Field trims down his songwriting efforts for a sparse, bare-bones effect that’s as accessible as any of his previous work for newcomers and old fans alike.
