Atlanta-born Kaki King initially made a name for herself several years
back via her prowess on guitars of all kinds (acoustic, electric, lap
steel, etc.), using tapping, picking, looping, layering, and
percussive techniques to absolutely astonishing ends. Rolling Stone
named her a “Guitar God”the only woman ever so hailed by the magazine
(a sad-but-true fact, but I digress . . . ); in November, when she
performed a song with Foo Fighters at a London show, Dave Grohl noted
to the audience, “There are some guitar players that are good and
there are some guitar players that are really fucking good. And then
there’s Kaki King.” While all of that remains true, the thing that
stands out about King’s brand-new Dreaming of Revenge isn’t
necessarily her instrumental mastery but the songs, and how her
absolutely alluring, breathy voice and her storytelling mesh with
post-rock, campfire-folk, and dream-pop textures, often in an
appealingly haunting way. King is coming to town with a four-piece
backing band, which promises much more than simply a night of “Guitar
Hero.” With Matt Sheehy. MICHAEL ALAN GOLDBERG
