Hilary Hahn

The Seattle Symphony presented violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg last week, and now here’s the anti-Nadja—poised, polished, Apollonian, and not one atom less expressive a player. Hearing them back-to-back will be a lesson in how two extremely different approaches to music-making can both produce transcendent results. Christian Swenson

Swenson is a dancer in the way that Bobby McFerrin is a singer, combining scat vocalizations with a free-wheeling physicality that is drop-dead funny at one moment and shockingly tender at the next. He’s based in Seattle, but mostly performs elsewhere, so this is an excellent chance to see a truly unique artist at work.
