Judy Blume’s novels of teen and ‘tween angst never go stale

Pre-adolescent girls across the nation emphasized with the heroine of Judy Blume’s 1970 novel Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, about an 11-year-old girl struggling with puberty and attempting to fill in her bra by chanting “I must, I must, I must increase my bust.” Her portrayal of pre-teens is so flawlessly realistic that it serves as a soothing reminder to readers that they’re not alone in their suffering. Most of Blume’s work was published in the ‘70s and ‘80s, but the issues she tackled—puberty, teen sexuality, parental divorce—remain relevant. She’ll be at the University Book Store this afternoon promoting her newest story collection, Soupy Saturdays with The Pain and The Great One, about sibling relations. Now that many of her readers have graduated from the torturous period known as adolescence, they can thank her personally.
