In 1996, Mushroom Jazz bloomed as one of the coolest compilations to come out of the electronic music scene to that date. Taking cues from multi-culti music aficionado and BBC DJ Gilles Peterson, San Francisco DJ Farina mashed up house, hip hop, and jazzy downtempo for something fresh that few who heard it back then can forget. In fact, hes gone on to release five volumes, most recently in 2005, expertly blending tunes from Soul Providers, Pete Rock, Zion I, and more. His live sets are on the housier side, though, so you wont slip, even if youre tripping. With Jeromy Nail and Lurob. RACHEL SHIMP
