Not having kept up with Disney heroines, I needed a little background info from a fan re Disney On Ice presents Princess Wishes, their latest extravaganza starring blade-borne simulacra of Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Tinkerbell. But one phone call to the nearest eight-year-old at hand got me the lowdown. Who’s your favorite? After deep consideration, she decided on Belle, because “I like the way she helps the Beast.” Do you have any problems with the concept of a presumably legless mermaid skating? No, “I think that would be cool to see.” She does admit to preferring, however, the Russian version of The Little Mermaid, closer to the Hans Christian Andersen original, in which, well. . . Ariel dies, albeit poetically: “She turns into the foam on the sea.” I’m guessing that plot twist will be omitted from this show.
