Lets not get into a discussion about what punk rock is and isnt. For the purposes of this blurb, anything done with gusto, verve, and a devil-may-care attitude is punk. Like calling yourself the Voodoo Organist, as L.A. musician Scott Wexton does, and banging out tales of fire and brimstone with a touring pal known as the Devil Drums (Robin Kennon). Their bluesy, gothic sound is very much reminiscent of self-described influences such as Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Howlin Wolfif any of them had played junk percussion and theremin while moaning about Satan. Wextons Hammond organ can be playful (Can I get a Witness?) or used to make a campy, morose dirge (The Serpent Dance) that conjures thoughts of the skeleton organ booby-trap in The Goonies: play the wrong chords, and you die!
