Sculptor Deborah Butterfield attributes her love of horses to being born on the day of the 75th Kentucky Derby. As a child, she convinced her parents to pay for riding lessons. She then befriended a veterinarian who allowed her to tag along on horse-related calls. In Sculpture (through August 23), Butterfield pays homage to her favorite beasts by transforming driftwood, wire, bronze, and scrap metal into gorgeous life-size horses that alternate between appearing majestic and vulnerable. Some stand head-to-head with viewers; others kneel at their feet. Given the high demand for her meticulous equine creations by collectors and galleries alike (her résumé includes an installation at New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art), youd be wise to take in Butterfields horses before they stampede out of town.
