In her first show at the Henry Art Gallery, Dawn Cerny turns an historically-obsessed eye to issues of death, war, and trauma. From Catherine Person Gallery to SOIL to Gallery4Culture, Cerny’s previous shows have all been resoundingly charming: installations of ink and watercolor on paper exploring history from a serious, well-read, and oftentimes humorous perspective. At the Henry, Cerny’s exhibit, entitled “We’re all going to die (except for you),” pairs new works on paper with—appropriately enough—historical objects sourced from the Henry and the Burke Museum, as well as a private collection. These include mourning garments and landscape paintings dating to the 19th century and seven taxidermied owls. In addition, one of the Henry’s galleries will be outfitted as an open studio/library/waiting room; for the length of the exhibition, you’ll be able to visit the artist at work.
