Guiltboys, Leatherbirds, Boneheads and Other Bits collects the veteran local artist’s photos, sketches, and prints. Feathery bird skeletons figure in some works, while the recurring doodle of Guiltboy is everywhere, like a smiling little voodoo doll that Loewenstein is using to exorcise his, well, guilt? Deliberately crude, as if executed by a child’s hand, Guiltboy is drawn and rephotographed in various iterations, most of them surrounded by handwritten measurements and annotations. He’s like a small-scale model for something never realized in larger, rounder form. He’s both cheerful and oppressed, resilient despite whatever forces the world is throwing at him. Also on view: Loewenstein’s ghostly, white-on-white license plates, rendered in delicate bas relief, as if removed from cars that never existed. Note closing reception on April 30. BRIAN MILLER
