Clean Up That River!

Being Green

Seriously. Who knew community service mixed with a little old-fashioned environmental education could be so much fun, but this one sounds like a blast. The third annual Duwamish River Festival will feature food, live music, a recycled art contest, kayak tours, Duwamish tribal dancers, and perhaps most exciting of all, everyone’s favorite mascot: Bert the Salmon! The Environmental Protection Agency listed the lower Duwamish River, a five-mile stretch that runs through South Seattle, as a federal Superfund site in 2001. Come to South Park and celebrate the community’s clean-up successes—and help them hold the Feds’ feet to the fire for future assistance. There’s even a boat ride in it for ya. A free water taxi will run continuously from Gateway Park North (across the river from Georgetown at Eighth Avenue South and South Portland Street) to the festival site. Viva Bert the Salmon! Viva clean water!
