Boredoms

Friday, March 21

Any time Boredoms come to town is cause for celebration, but the

band’s appearance is especially welcome after a protracted quiet spell

a few years back seemed to suggest the legendary Japanese

experimental/noise outfit’s demise after nearly 20 years. Perpetually

described as a cross between Sonic Youth and Butthole Surfers,

Boredoms are far weirder, more exploratory, and way more engrossing

than even that hybrid suggests. Led by Yamantaka Eye—he of the

prodigious shrieks and gurgles—the band is equally at home with

violent guitar-centric typhoons and playful, halcyon electronic

minimalism, and most points in between. After re-emerging from that

hiatus as Vooredoms in 2003, Eye and company are back to Boredoms, and

seemingly re-energized. Last year’s much-talked-about 7/7/07 show in

New York City featured 77 drummers; this outing won’t feature quite so

much percussion, but it’ll be the first time Boredoms are performing

“in the round,” enabling fans to, as they put it, “move with the

sound.” And Eye will also be toting along his “Sevener”—a seven-neck

guitar that alone is probably worth the price of admission. With Human
