Team Edward, team Jacob, team history? The Quileute Tribe of our Olympic Peninsula was thrust into the limelight, thanks to the Twilight series of books and movies. Don’t blame them for that. Rather, this small exhibit on the third floor honors Quileute culture with wolf headdresses, shaman’s sculptures, basketry, and more items. (Sorry, girls, but shirtless photos of Taylor Lautner are not included.) Most of these artifacts are made of natural materials: a club delicately carved from whale bone; baskets crafted from cedar, nettles, and berry-based dyes. There’s also a helpful timeline of tribal history (dramatically impacted by 19th century settlers) and a 12-minute video relating Quileute heritage and mythology far different than Stephenie Meyer’s rendering.
