Our tribute to the holiday services provided by Seattle’s Best Dive Bars continues with Bernard’s on Seneca (315 Seneca St.).Screw the bar at the W, detour left and head to the Fairmont lobby bar for one kind of people watching, but detour right and down the hill through the heavy plank door to the hole that is Bernard’s for a completely unique hotel bar experience. Bernard’s is in the basement of the Hotel Seattle, a perfectly serviceable hotel that predates the flash of the hotels W and Monaco around the corner. Two steps in to this bar and sunlight is forgotten, anonymity conferred. Brave the free happy hour food if you dare, expect something deep fried, greasy or salty–all four if you’re lucky.
