Yoga on Beacon is not a big space. The location is far from glamorous, or even memorable. But this small storefront studio on Beacon Avenue South, a few blocks down from the new light-rail station and across from a Tesoro, has something no other studio does: the passion and compassion of Dee Hein, who launched YoBe in October 2007 and has spent more than half her life immersed in the study and practice of yoga. A minimalist approach (you won’t see any Buddhas, Ganeshes on the wall, or chiming bells—”no dogma,” says Hein with a smile) and her low-key demeanor help keep class sizes small, with a focus on individual attention and empowerment. Hein founded YoBe following a decade on Orcas Island, where she ran yoga workshops for people with cancer and their families. YoBe covers the spectrum of yoga activities, from “free time” every Wednesday, starting at noon, when she throws the doors open to everyone (“just so parents and kids have a place to play and explore that’s safe and fun,” Hein says) all the way to a late-August retreat on Mt. Rainier, as Hein and her husband Matt Fioretti (an experienced Rainier and Himalayan guide) conduct a four-day getaway, with morning and evening yoga sessions and daily hikes.
