A Jim McDermott fan shows his appreciation by betting his child’s college savings.Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WAgers) released a study yesterday that showed the government would rake in $42 billion over the next 10 years if they regulated, rather than outlawed, internet gambling. McDermott is currently peddling legislation that would do just that. And the Joint Committee on Taxation’s report is Exhibit A, he says, for its passage.Like booze during Prohibition and weed (maybe) during our current Great Recession, it seems online poker and the like may now become the next vices to go legal thanks to our collective brokeness. Speaking as a guy who still keeps an open account with a shady off-shore site, this couldn’t come soon enough.Gambling won’t go away just because we want it to. Better to siphon off some of that filthy lucre while we can. That way we can build more schools and hire better teachers who’ll show our kids how not to grow up to be degenerates like us.
