The local “baroque-pop” outfit Tomten–who’s received some Reverb love recently–has narrowly squeaked into this weekend’s Sound Off! Finals. After losing the semifinals round on February 12 to the Appalachian-flavored bluegrass group Northern Departure, Tomten’s being given another chance–EMP’s Youth Advisory Board voted them as Sound Off!’s Wildcard. Tomten will join their defeaters Northern Departure, along with Seattle synth-pop band Fit for Hounds and Surrey, B.C.’s sugary indie-poppers the Oh Wells, this Saturday evening at EMP’s Sky Church at 8 p.m. (If you want to watch, tickets are $10 for the public, $7 if you’re a student or an EMP member). Sound Off!’s winner will, of course, receive a bevy of prizes, including a performance slot at this year’s Bumbershoot and a live on-air performance on 107.7 The End’s The Young and the Restless–you know the drill. The judges to impress will be Seattle Music Commission Chair Ben London; Sound Off! alumni from Idiot Pilot Daniel Anderson; London Bridge Studio owner Jonathan Plum; Chris Estey with Three Imaginary Girls and the KEXP blog; DeVon Manier, President of Sportn’ Life Records; and Trent Moorman of Head Like a Kite and Fresh Espresso.Good luck, Tomten!
