The best way to get to Lake Washington Boulevard from Capitol Hill and the Central District by bike is also one of the most dramatic: the I-90 Pedestrian/Bike Tunnel, a secondary route above the freeway tube that passes through Mount Baker. On a hot, bright day, you pedal into the dim passageway, which is just long and cool enough to chill the sweat pooling in the small of your back, then shoot back out into the sunlight. A quick turn, and you find yourself a few stories above the tunnel’s eastern portal, looking out onto the freeway bridge, Lake Washington, Mercer Island, and downtown Bellevue. What an amazing bit of luck, you think, to make it to this spot.—Jonathan Kauffman Path entrance at Sam Smith Park, Martin Luther King Jr. Way S. just south of Judkins.
