Where: Cafe Campagne1600 Post Alley, 728-2233, PIKE PLACE MARKET.Official tasting notes:As our bartender remarked, Cafe Campagne has been offering happy hour for about six months. It’s new since I was there last. We drank copiously, but in keeping to our $13 limit, and sticking to the Happy Hour menu, the eats were a little skimpy. When: Happy Hour is Monday-Friday, 4-6 p.m.What does $13 get you? A $10 half liter of wine, a $2 lamb slider, and a $1 pate sandwich. (Plus tax and tip.) Puff pastry does not an ideal bun make, for either a petite lamb slider, or a pate sandwich. And these eats were tiny. Trying to stick to the $13 limit, we didn’t order more than one each. The rich pork and chicken liver pate was better spread on the baguette (the crust offered a nice textural counterpoint), and the lamb slider, though tender and moistened with a garlic-rich aoli, was just alright. On the menu they’re called petite burgers, but they’re referred to by the staff as sliders. We did, however, indulge an extra $2 on a generous cheese plate. As our bartender explained, Comte is a French gruyere. This nutty, firm cheese was offset nicely by the sweetness of syrupy stewed plums, and served with a generous portion of sliced baguette. Food-wise, this was the best deal. Your wine choices for the carafe are simple (and unsnobby): red or rose. The carafes rotate, but our red was a full-bodied, berry-red Domaine du Prince Costiers de Nimes 2006, which our bartender described as a syrah from the south of France, originating close to the Rhone region. A huge bargain, this 500 ml carafe would have been enough to satisfy three people. Would I eat it again? I’d eat more, drink less, and stray onto the small plates menu, which offers a bit more sustenance for not a lot more cash. Insider Tip: I enjoyed the casual drinking atmosphere at the Cafe, though I have to say, I was happier eating upstairs at Campagne’s slightly more formal Happy Hour, which offers a much broader bar menu. Potatoes fried in duck fat, beef tartare, and a full sized lamb burger are some of the not so mini attractions at the restaurant’s bar.
