Who’s On First?
It’s a shame that the most beautiful, regal old bars in Seattle are sequestered for pre-stadium rendezvous and backward-cap beer guzzling. Well, it’s a shame, that is, unless your cap is on backward or you’re a huge M’s fan. The J & M Cafe and Cardroom is a gorgeous old saloon; cathedral ceilings, richly oiled wood, and a majestic bar back give you the feeling that you’re participating in some grand tradition. But good luck actually appreciating this when the bar is packed with heads careened toward the sports station, or when some cover band is pontificating on “Gloria” (the bar hosts live bands Sunday through Thursday). Our advice: Enjoy the J & M’s history in the off-season or stop by during the day for lunch. 201 First Ave. S., 206-292-0663.
