Some kids are scared of the dark and some adults are scared

Some kids are scared of the dark and some adults are scared of gay couples. The former have never managed to organize, but the latter are aiming to get a measure on November’s ballot to repeal the “everything but marriage” law the state legislature passed this year. The Secretary of State’s office just announced that the backers of R-71 are scheduled to turn in their signature petitions on Saturday. R-71 spokesperson Larry Stickney says “it’ll be a close call” whether the group can hit the required 120,577 signatures. (Typically, 25% of signatures are invalidated, so they’d need to submit about 150,000.) At last “guesstimate” 1.5 weeks ago, they had around 75,000 unvalidated signatures, says Stickney, who adds “we may be closing in on 100,000” at present. They’ll need every signature they can get, he says. In that spirit, we invite them to collect the petition in our office. We have a few drops for their not-quite-a-torrent of support
