A beer carrying the famed Rainier label will be brewed again in Washington.

In a joint press release from Craft Brew Alliance (owner of Redhook and other sorta-craft beers) and Rainier’s parent company, which also owns PBR and other hipster-loved swills, the companies announced that a new Rainier beer called Rainier Pale Mountain Ale will be brewed in Woodinville, home now to the Redhook brewery.

From the release:

“PBC subsidiary Rainier Brewing Company (“Rainier”) will begin brewing Rainier Pale Mountain Ale, as well as other Rainier brands, at CBA’s brewery in Woodinville, Washington in the spring of 2016. As part of the agreement, PBC has been granted an option to purchase the Woodinville facility at any time during the next three years.

“The agreement between CBA and Rainier provides benefits for both companies. As part of CBA’s strategy to continue evolving its national brewing footprint and drive financial profitability, the company is making significant investments to increase production capability and efficiency and support its growth in key markets. The expansion investments include increasing capacity in its largest and most efficient brewery in Portland to 750,000 barrels per year and building a new 100,000-barrel brewery in Hawaii. The agreement with Rainier enables it to maximize capacity in its Woodinville brewery [usually known as the Redhook Brewery] while pursuing these expansion projects. For Rainier, the agreement marks a true homecoming with the return of brewing to its home state of Washington.”

Washington Beer Blog has the whole press release posted for those interested.

Again, Rainier Pale Mountain Ale is a new product, distinct from the Ran-ye you and your friends are currently shotgunning.

It’s unclear from the release whether Redhook will definitely keep being brewed in Woodinville. We have a call in to find out.

It does note:

“Under the terms of the agreement, CBA will continue to operate the Woodinville brewery and adjacent Redhook Forecaster’s Pub.”

This news doesn’t come out of nowhere. The Seattle PI reported last February that Rainier ownership was scouting out locations in the Seattle area where the beer could be brewed again. In 1999, PBR bought the storied Seattle brewery and moved its brewing operations down to California shortly thereafter. Still, we Seattleites have continued to claim it as our own, and today carry out our daily lives under not one but two glowing Rs.
