Cute dogs everywhere agree, leave the euthanizing to the pros.If the case of Kirk Frazier teaches us anything, it’s that the dusty old saying about wanting something done right and doing it yourself should never be applied to pet euthanization. On Monday, King County prosecutors charged Frazier with animal cruelty for attempting to kill his dog Pretzel with a number of blunt objects, reports the Seattle Times. In September, Pretzel was found bleeding and beaten on a South Park street. When questioned later, Frazier told investigators that the incident began after Pretzel bit his wife and another family dog. According to documents, Frazier struck Pretzel three times on the head with his shotgun, and then carried the body outside to the garbage can, thinking the dog dead. But when Frazier headed out to his job at Graham Trucking hours later, he found Pretzel still alive and wagging his tail as if he “wanted to go for a ride.”Given that this post is essentially about a guy beating an animal to death, it might be bad form to distract from that and marvel at Pretzel’s physical resilience, especially since he was later put to sleep. But this was a dog who, after the first botched euthanization attempt, was suffocated in a plastic bag while its owner drove to work. After they arrived, said owner beat the dog across the head twice with a hammer and again left it for dead. And yet Pretzel still managed to pick itself up and escape. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Pretzel was the most badass canine since, say, White Fang. Frazier, for his part, was fired after his co-workers called police to report the incident. He now faces up to a year in jail.
