If you grew up within sniffing distance of a Jewish bakery, March was the sweetest month of the year. March is when the Jewish holiday of Purim generally falls, and with Purim come the cookies called hamantaschen. These luscious triangular morsels filled with poppyseed, apricot, or prune pur饠($1.25) are, by tradition, named after the tricorn hat the Biblical villain Haman wore, but since taschen means pockets, not hat, I dont know how much credence you should give that. But I digress: The reason I am telling you about hamantaschen nearly five months before the holiday is that hamantaschen arent just for Purim any more!!! Sweet Lorraines Bakery bakes em regularly, and bakes em better than a lot of Jewish grannies do. Lorraines crust is firm, sweet shortbread, so buttery that it hardly needs a filling, so its a good thing Lorraines fillings are so subtle and fragrant, not too sweet and just sticky enough. Pick up an assorted dozen next time youre in charge of providing the meetings baked goods and, until the last crumbs are devoured, become the most popular person in the office. Sweet Lorraines Bakery, 3055 21st Ave. W., 206-301-9100, INTERBAY
