Chris KornelisChan Marshall, aka Cat Power, at Showbox SoDo on April 11, 2008.Jukebox, Cat Power: I was the last person in the room to get Chan Marshal. In fact, it wasn’t until The Greatest that I was counted among the converts. The sax on “Lived in Bars” still leaves me breathless. But, Jukebox’s “Song to Bobby” turns me to putty. Every time. The Hazards of Love, The Decemberists: I’ve never liked The Decemberists. Not that I haven’t tried. I did my best to get into this monster, and just couldn’t do it. I like Colin Meloy’s voice when he’s exercising restraint while the band goes all theatrical (see title track #1). But when Meloy yields to the absurdity of his surroundings, things fall apart for me. And the result ends up sounding like the protagonists from a forthcoming Christopher Guest flick.Jim Noir, Jim Noir: The sun’s out, which means I’m submitting to “Commander Jameson.” This spectacular, irony-free pop record — and its predecessor, Tower of Love — won’t leave my “stereo” until October.
