If people couldn’t vote past the age of 18, Barack Obama would win the presidency in a landslide, and Dino Rossi would narrowly be elected governor. Full details of Washington State’s mock K-12 election after the jump. The results are in, and the winners are Barack Obama and Dino Rossi. At least, that’s how Washington’s K-12 students voted in the 2008 Mock Election.Students passed all three statewide initiatives. Separate initiatives for the Mock Election’s youngest voters (K-4) didn’t fare as well. Initiative 975, concerning a mandatory serving of vegetables during school lunch, was defeated by more than 36 percent. The total tally left Rossi the gubernatorial victor by 222 votes. Obama won the presidential race over John McCain by more than 4,500 votes, a 28 percent margin of victory. Sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of State, the 2008 Mock Election encouraged civics awareness and discussion in homes and classrooms across the state.Students voted online from Monday, October 27, through Friday, October 31. Nearly 18,000 K-12 students participated, a huge increase from the 2008 Primary Mock Election. Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed is pleased with the high student turnout and hopes to see record voter participation in the November 4 General Election.“Whether you are 18 or 81, your vote counts,” Reed said. “Your vote can make a difference.” Reed cautioned that the Mock Election is in no way a reliable prediction for the outcome of the real election. “Students often disagree with their parents,” Reed stated. “Just because a candidate wins or loses the Mock Election doesn’t mean the same will hold true on November 4.”Complete results for the 2008 Mock Election can be viewed at www.vote.wa.gov .
