Lunch Box

Grand Central Baking Company Grand Central is a chain, but it’s a cozy, Northwest chain—one well-trafficked location in Pioneer Square, housed in a beautiful old building on the cobblestone plaza, and three in Portland. The homey goodness of the place is almost better suited to Portland’s Hawthorne Boulevard than our own Pi Square, an overrun playpen for tourists and straying office workers. Still, getting out of the downtown fishbowl is worth it when great egg salad on fresh-baked olive bread—or a wonderfully simple focaccia sandwich of portobello mushroom, eggplant, and havarti cheese—is what you’re swimming toward. Most whole sandwiches go for $5.95, while salad specials run a bit higher; a sweet mixture of greens, golden beets, goat cheese, and cinnamon-candied walnuts recently cost $6.50. Best of all, Grand Central offers free delivery, to downtown and contiguous neighborhoods, on all orders over $20. NEAL SCHINDLER 214 First Ave. S., 206-622-3644. PIONEER SQUARE
