Dorn checks in at 6 p.m. tonight.State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn is headed for the slammer tonight. As punishment for his DUI conviction, he will spend from 6 p.m. tonight to 6 p.m. tomorrow night at a municipal jail run by the city of Buckley, according to his attorney, Thomas Ellington. Buckley is a few miles down the road from where the superintendent got caught a couple weeks ago driving home after apparently having drunk one two many beers at a crab feed. Dorn intends to use the experience as a “teachable moment,” Ellington says. What might that mean? Well, as his attorney says, there’s the obvious message about not drinking and driving. But maybe the superintendent intends to do something more interesting. There are not many state officials who could conduct their own personal Scared Straight sessions. Dorn now could!So instead of having juvenile delinquents troop into bleak prisons, where their potential fate is laid out for them by inmates, Dorn could usher wayward students into his Olympia office and milk his one day in jail for all it’s worth. “Don’t end up like me,” he might warn them. Of course, then, looking around at Olympia’s gilded halls and marble columns, the kids might decide that’s not such a bad fate after all.
