You may have an abundance of quirky and delicious food carts, Portland, but Real Simple still likes us better.Question: How does a city with the nation’s most congested traffic also become its most time-savingest? Follow-up: What the hell does it mean if a city is “time-saving” anyhow?Real Simple, the patronizingly-named lifestyle mag, takes a stab at answering both.It defines “time-saving” as everything from number of libraries to how long you’re likely to wait for an ambulance. Basically, by “time-saving” Real Simple means, “Does your city work?” And the answer for Seattle is, “Yes it does. And astoundingly well at that.”We are an “icon of urban efficiency.” Thanks in part to our “state-of-the-art signal-optimization program.” Which “synchronizes hundreds of traffic lights,” but doesn’t make rush hour on 520 any less of a parking lot.Still, weakly-argued plaudit or not, it’s praise. And just because we save time doesn’t mean we aren’t a little needy and in desperate need of approval. Eat it, Portland!
