A Canadian man wanted for the 1983 murder of an Oklahoma college student was nabbed Friday after he got impatient with traffic and tried to sign up for a “trusted traveler” program between the U.S. and Canada.Suhail Shanti, 48, of Burnaby, British Columbia, apparently was tired of the long waits as he tried to enter the U.S. So he applied for a NEXUS pass, which would would have expedited his trips. Big mistake. Shanti was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Blaine, Wash., when agents took his fingerprints as he tried to sign up for the program.Shanti and the victim went to school together at what is now Carl Albert State College, in Poteu, Okla., Marion Fry, an assistant district attorney in Le Flore County, Okla., told Seattle Weekly. Both were from Morocco.It’s unclear why Shanti would need to jump the border so often. But a LinkedIn account listed in Shanti’s name lists a string of jobs in Canada, Dubai, and Jordan, so it may have been work-related.Law enforcement in Washington and Oklahoma said they are still digging up details on the case and waiting for the arrival of an old case file.
