Some brilliant Gawker commenter.Huh gets a taste of his own medicine. LOL.Ben Huh is the founder of the Cheezburger Network of desktop diversion sites, including FAIL blog and I Can Has Cheezburger. As such, he’s managed to turn free content into $4 million a year in revenue. But is he cashing in because of nearly-free employees? That’s the question Gawker’s asking after Huh’s latest blog post.In it, the webtreneur expresses dismay that some applicants for two entry-level jobs are scoffing at Cheezburger’s offer of $8.55 to $10 per hour for contract work with no benefits. Huh is especially taken aback by one applicant who writes, “I don’t even wipe my ass for $10 an hour.”Huh seems to think that good candidates will be attracted to a job because they’re passionate, not because of how much it pays. Which may or may not be an effective way of attracting talent. But is certainly an easier opinion to hold when you yourself are passionate, successful and less susceptible to the whims of a shitty job market.Gawker is less impressed with Huh’s up-by-the-bootstraps philosophy and his offer of minimum wage salaries. From someone they call a “Cheezburger spy,” they get a less flattering portrait of working at the internet’s biggest meme repository:[Huh] seems ignorant of the reason people devote their lives to startups is because they have OWNERSHIP in the company-not because they get to look at pictures of cats… Mr. Huh seems to want to create the APPEARANCE of a great workplace while paying his workers as little as possible. As for Huh’s response, that’s unknown. Possibly because Gawker forgot to ask.
