As I mentioned earlier today, I have a story in tomorrow’s paper about local session drummer Matt Chamberlain. I was first turned onto his drumming by way of The Wallflowers’ Bringing Down the Horse. I still consider it some of the tastiest drumming of the last decade. Over a some prosciutti and beverages at Belltown’s Black Bottle, Chamberlain explained to me that Horse, along with a couple other hit albums he made around the same time — Fiona Apple’s Tidal, Macy Gray’s On How Life Is — helped launch his post-SNL/Pearl Jam session career. He’s since gone on to record with Elton John, David Bowie, and our own John Roderick. In the above audio file, Chamberlain talks about those early records, and what its like being a drummer for hire. I weave in a few delicious samples for dramatic effect. Please excuse the sound of traffic (we were sitting outside) and the occasional gust of wind (we were siting outside).
