Summer Lovin’

On the screen, at least

Be careful when you take a date to Port Orchard’s Rodeo Drive-In. Anyone who’s seen the “Stranded at the Drive-In” scene in Grease (“You think I’m going to stay here with you in this, this sin wagon??”) knows how quickly things can go awry if two people aren’t on the same page. You could be better off with a group, so if your gang likes movies and wants to savor the last bits of summer outdoors, the Rodeo is one of the best places to do it. A few weeks ago, ours took a gorgeous sunset ferry ride to Bremerton, then enjoyed a Simpsons Movie/horror movie double-feature while chowing on snack bar treats like the infamous, admittedly delicious “pizza dog.” The Rodeo, built in 1949, has three screens for variety—check the web site for an updated schedule. SW Web Editor Chris Kornelis, who lives over that way, suggests making a day of it: “The Gold Mountain Golf Club nearby is one of the best public courses around. Then there’s Jimmy D’s, the best breakfast and pull tabs you’ll ever find.” Rodeo closes for the season at the end of September, so hurry up…don’t be branded a fool. [$5-$7.50 for a double feature. Gates open 1½ hours before showtime (dusk).]
