From Chicago, Palladini’s show Subtraction includes a lot of women averting their eyes, shoulders hunched defensively, sometimes seeking shelters in David Hockney swimming pools. The sunlight is harsh and unforgiving. Figures, some of them kissing, are outlined simply, like the panels of comic book. Some scenes are painted on plywood, emphasizing their very distilled essence. One work is called Movie Kiss #10, making the smooch that much more generic–not only is it from Hollywood, or of a couple emulating Hollywood romance, but it’s not even the first in a series. Palladini’s protagonists seem to be gesturing at gestures, posing at poses. For all his bright colors, there’s a coldness to the emotions at play. True to the title of his show, they’ve been subtracted. BRIAN MILLER
