For her next trick, Sen. Stevens will magically reinstate prohibition and the poll tax.I understand that part of the definition of a conservative is someone who wants to limit change. But in seeking to undo a constitutional amendment that’s been in place for nearly a century, Sen. Val Stevens may be taking the idea a little too far.Because there’s nothing else (budget) worth worrying about (CRISIS), Sen. Stevens has decided that now is the time to repeal the 17th amendment (Warning: PDF). For those unfamiliar, that’d be the one that says we elect our Senators by a popular vote, rather than having the Legislature pick ’em.The amendment came about in 1913 because the rise of political parties was leading to bitter fights over who should be elected. Some arguments took so long, the Senate spots remained unfilled for months at a time, grinding the gears of government to a stop. Fortunately for Sen. Stevens, we live in an age of unprecedented bipartisanship and bureaucratic efficiency, so I’m sure this new plan to return to the old days will work out swell.(H/T: HorsesAss)
