Rep. Hurst was for the measure before he was against it.Rep. Christopher Hurst (D-Enumclaw) seems confused. As Chairman of the House committee that voted today to defeat a bill that would have legalized pot, Hurst painted himself as a man not willing to meddle with Washington (D.C., that is).The P-I quotes Rep. Hurst as saying, “I can not in good conscience .. pass a law that is against federal law.” Shortly thereafter, however, the politician followed that up with another, possibly contradictory comment.”One of my observations is that, should the federal government be in the business of regulating marijuana? I have questions,” Hurst said, despite his no vote. “I’m a state’s right person, I always have been…this is an issue that may be better served by individual states (making the decision).”As we mentioned yesterday, the effort to legalize marijuana in Washington will not be led by politicians like Rep. Hurst. It will be up to voters who, should an initiative make it on the ballot, won’t have the option of also voting “no…with reservations.”
