Naturally, the reign of Dubya has made us all wary of careers being passed from father to son—but don’t let that scare you away from hearing Julian Schwarz, 17-year-old son of SSO’s Gerard Schwarz, conduct the Lake Union Civic Orchestra tonight. For one thing, he’s a powerfully gifted musician—specifically, cellist—in his own right. Second, he was appointed LUCO’s assistant conductor not by the Supreme Court, but by its music director, Christophe Chagnard, who calls Julian “a musician of enormous personality and emotional range . . . his honesty on the podium inspires musicians to embrace his precocious artistry.” He’ll lead Dukas’ sparkling The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. For the concert’s second half, Chagnard’s chosen Holst’s The Planets, one of those pieces I make a point of listening to every five years or so to see if I still can’t stand it.
