Departure of the Sonics notwithstanding, pro hoops in Seattle has been looking up lately. The city’s remaining professional basketball team–the beloved Storm–have the WNBA’s third-best record and are on a 5-game winning streak, stoking hopes of another championship. (They won their first in 2004.) But those hopes probably cracked this weekend along with Lauren Jackson’s back. The team announced that the Aussie center, who happens to be the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, is out indefinitely with a stress fracture in her lower back. Which sounds horribly painful and unlikely to heal quickly (Playoffs begin in mid/late September). Sorry, Seattle: Apparently, the basketball gods hate you. At least until the Husky men’s season starts.
