When John Calkins was stopped for drunk driving by a Bonney Lake police officer last year, he had, like a lot of drivers, an issue with the cop: “I thought he had an attitude problem,” Calkins says. Calkins would know about that. He’s the police chief of nearby Pacific, and is in his second day of trial for DUI, the News Tribune reports.He claims having just three drinks in three hours before he was pulled over for weaving in his Corvette. Among his excuses: Steering a Corvette is “like driving a go-kart.” He also had communication problems because he has to place his finger on the stoma, or hole, in his throat to talk. And as for refusing to allow the officer to test the movement of his eyes? That test’s unreliable, the chief says.
