Our tribute to the holiday services provided by Seattle’s Best Dive Bars

Our tribute to the holiday services provided by Seattle’s Best Dive Bars continues with Hattie’s Hat(5231 Ballard Ave. N.W.).Oh, Hattie’s. The brilliant thing about this bar-slash-diner is that it has some kind of built-in, magical douche repellent. Even with the Fremontification of Ballard that happens every weekend, the popped collar types tend to overlook this little nugget of Old Ballard Avenue as if a Jedi mind trick were involved. As a dive, Hattie’s feels more adorable and old timey than most, more like a place your grandpa would have frequented after the second shift at the warehouse. The dark wood booths and bar and the moody, painted landscapes are covered with the patina of a million Camel lights; and sometimes, especially in the summer, I’d swear you can smell the cigarette smoke sweating out of a few surfaces. Outside of the comical non sequitur of a giant fish tank in the middle of the back room, remodels have never robbed Hattie’s of its divey charm. The drinks are kept simple and the menu classic, sweet potato fries with blue cheese, bacon and chilies being a brilliant exception.
