Washington Dance Club

Tribute the 1930s at a dance club’s 20th b-day soiree

Never heard of the Avalon Ballroom? The building, around the corner from the downtown Greyhound station, opened in 1932 and was a popular spot for ballroom, latin, swing, polka, foxtrot, waltz, you name it, from the ‘30s-‘50s. It was renovated in 1985 with its art deco architecture left intact, including a 3,000 sq. ft. solid maple dance floor. Apparently, there are some “old timers” still around who can tell stories about dancing at the Avalon in its heyday—reason enough to venture to tonight’s party there, if you love getting the scoop from those who were there. The Washington Dance Club, which hosts classes and dances in the building, celebrates its 20th anniversary with the Portage Bay Big Band, and “The Swinging Radio Hour” cabaret producer/MC David Hunter Koch. Plus, you can dress vintage (or semi-formal) and get a snap in front of a classy 1931 Chrysler Roadster. You’ll be the bee’s knees.
