Husky fans love Brandon RoyBrandon Roy is the best player in Husky basketball history. He was also the best player on the Lorenzo Romar teams that re-established the UW as a basketball school. Fittingly, he’ll see his his #3 jersey retired at tonight’s game. He’ll be only the second Husky to have his jersey retired. The other is Bob Coubregs, who earned the honor by a vote of his teammates at a 1953 post-season banquet. Roy may also be the best player in the history of state basketball powerhouse Garfield High School. (Here’s a good rundown of the talent that was at the school just while Roy was there.) Amazingly, he’s the first player from the school to make the NBA, and the only one to stick. (Will Conroy has done a few short stints.) Even more amazingly, Roy’s older brother Ed Roy was considered the superior talent, though his career was derailed by academic issues. Roy almost met the same fate, when initially low standardized test scores led him to a job at a Port of Seattle shipping facility rather than a spot on a top college or pro team. Now he’s an NBA All-Star. And if he maintains his current pace, he’ll be one of the best Portland Trail Blazers of all time, though he’ll probably never hold the top honor. What’s the secret? Ask him yourself at Niketown this afternoon, where, according to a press release, he “hopes to offer tips to young basketballplayers who desire to achieve similar goals.” Or just go to the game. Cheap seats are still available.
