It doesn’t surprise me that this week’s feature on Seattle’s Asian nightlife scene has so many people talking. Race gets people riled up. Opinions vary on whether the article is a legitimate portrayal of its subjects, and that’s fine with me. It was never my intention for this article to represent the city’s entire Asian community. That’s an impossible task I would never try to take on. Like me, the other people involved in this story–the photographer and cover illustrator–are Asian American, and would not agree to such a thing either. What I jumped at was the chance to write about a unique part of Seattle’s nightlife scene that rarely gets noticed or discussed. The information in this feature was gathered over numerous visits to establishments like Venom, War Room, and Purple Dot. And I stand by my account.
