Justin Dylan RenneyPhotos of Sheryl Crow’s Bumbershoot set are on the way.Who: Sheryl CrowWhen: 9:15 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5Where: MainstageAs expected, Sheryl Crow brought a phenomenal band to Bumbershoot, with the majority of contributors maintaining a pulse (more than can be said for the backup percussion and other tricks piped in for the show). What was not expected was that, A. Her most popular song — judging from the reaction from the crowd — would be the insufferable “Soak Up the Sun”; and B. She would draw the smallest audience for a closing set I’ve ever seen, and possibly fewer people than Katy Perry fetched earlier in the afternoon. Yes, her cover of Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” was a welcomed encore and enlisted her crackerjack band’s finer qualities. But the rest of the show was limp, lifeless, and, I hate to say it, exactly what you’d expect from a Sheryl Crow show. For all our festival coverage, visit Bumbershoot.SeattleWeekly.com.
