In the history of terrible Christmas presents–from fruitcakes and vacuum cleaners to toasters and coupons for backrubs–nothing holds a candle to what Harold C. Donald of Shoreline apparently gave his mama (well, maybe this).Anyhow, as KOMO News reports on Tuesday, Donald was arrested last month for the brutal assault of Mac McWhirter. Police think (they think, because McWhirter is still in a coma) that he interrupted Donald and another man, supposedly one Lorenzo A. Leon, trying to steal his Jeep Cherokee, and got beat within inches of his life.As King County Sheriff’s deputies announced yesterday, they’d been on the lookout for a rare and expensive robe with an “exotic cat” graphic on it. McWhirter had been wearing the robe when he came out to try to stop Leon and his buddy from taking his Jeep, and in the ensuing beatdown, police thought his assailant may have got the garment stuck in the getaway car. After some investigatin’, the deputies ended up talking to Donald’s grandmother, who said that he came to her house the night that McWhirter was assaulted, his clothes were bloody, and he looked like he’d “stomped” someone.Next stop was interviewing Donald’s mom. And sure enough, she dragged out the same rare and expensive robe with the exotic cat design they had been looking for, its value slightly lessened by the bloodstains on it.The woman said her son gave it to her for Christmas. Now homeboy’s in jail, which even for his mom might be the best gift of all.
